New Jersey Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez faces a fresh wave of legal trouble with a dozen new criminal charges tied to a bribery scheme involving Egypt and Qatar. This development follows a recent plea deal from one of the indicted businessmen, who agreed to cooperate with investigators.
The new charges, part of a superseding indictment, include conspiracy, obstruction of justice, acting as a foreign agent, bribery, extortion, and honest services wire fraud. These augment the existing charges of conspiracy to commit bribery, honest services fraud, extortion, and acting as a foreign agent.
Despite the mounting legal pressure, Menendez maintains his innocence and claims the prosecutors are unfairly targeting him.
